Sam Cook’s prospects of making his Test debut have grown with the Essex seamer in a strong position to named in England’s squad to face Zimbabwe at the end of May.

The 27-year-old has been rested by Essex for their County Championship match against Worcestershire from Friday to manage his workload before the international summer, which begins on May 22 with a four-day Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge.

England have an injury crisis among their seam bowlers, with Mark Wood and Olly Stone out of action until at least July. Brydon Carse is recovering from a toe issue that has troubled him all year, Chris Woakes has an ankle injury which has prevented him from playing so far this season, and Dillon Pennington,
