Sam Cook’s prospects of making his Test debut have grown with the Essex seamer in a strong position to named in England’s squad to face Zimbabwe at the end of May.

The 27-year-old has been rested by Essex for their County Championship match against Worcestershire from Friday to manage his workload before the international summer, which begins on May 22 with a four-day Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge.

England have an injury crisis among their seam bowlers, with Mark Wood and Olly Stone out of action until at least July.
